The Top 5: Thoughts from the NCAA National Championship Game

  1. Best. Sign. Ever. During the half-time show, a young gal behind the ever-eloquent Charles Barkley was holding up a sign that said, ”I am happy to be here.” Awesomesauce.
  2. This championship game helped legitimize the sport of soccer in America. One of the biggest knocks against the world’s game is that there isn’t enough scoring. Enter the first half of the 2011 National Championship. There were a combined 41 points at the half. In a basketball game! When there is so little scoring, every bucket counts. People went nuts every time a basket was made because it was happening so rarely. Now you understand the intensity and emotion soccer fans feel whenever someone shoots it between the uprights.
  3. Jeremy Lamb has ridiculously long arms. When most people dribble, the ball comes up around the waist area. When Lamb dribbles, the ball barely comes above his knees. He blocked shots without leaving his feet. Why is his nickname not “Mr. Fantastic”?
  4. Blown call. With two seconds left on the clock, the UConn player holding the ball started jumping up and down with his teammates in a celebratory embrace. “Up-and-down.” That’s traveling, bro. The ref was standing right in front of him and totally missed it. This might not be a Jim Joyce moment, but let’s at least shoot for some consistency here.
  5. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. And sometimes you miss 81.8% of the shots you DO take. Butler was 12-of-64 from the field.
